Shom Thoughts

Always wanted to go to a yoga retreat. After the New Year I went to my hot yoga class and the instructor, Deborah Jaishree Spielman, announced a weekend retreat with YhomYoga in Chester, CT. I am thinking it’s perfect / local, not too long (in case I don’t make it…) and it supports my New Year resolution, “invest less in retail and much more in experience…”! She also recommended the movie, Avatar, which I went to see the next day and loved it. The Avatar message and Deb’s practice sold my yoga experience!

So there I was two weeks ago in Chester, CT with seventeen strangers sharing, seeing, chanting, dancing, tasting and feeling the Prem. The weekend was amazing, full of intense energy, wonders and feeling closer…Here are a few thoughts, after one of the meditations lights were out and I just wrote:

“Happy. I am here. Pictures. People. Beautiful energy. Anxious to open up to the Universe. I can feel, move with the sound, it is vibrating my soul. I can see, feel, tears of happy. The mood, light, food / engaging all senses. Love the flowers. Deb is so alive, present, inspiring. Her eyes radiate. Everybody feeds of her presence and spirit. It is refreshing to be a part of this. Her voice reaches deep, words make you explore the moment. It’s been a beautiful journey of discovery.”

Riding The Vinyasa Wave

Everytime I make time to treat myself to hot yoga I walk out a new person, mind and body. One hour and a half of soul awareness, complete mind detox and empowerment. Today we learned how to surf the vinyasa wave. Through the flow of movement and rotating in a circle you complete a Mandala. The moves remind me of taking the perfect turns while snowboarding, barely touching the snow. The weight of your body and shift in gravity turn you and the board is your only connection to the ground. The vinyasa wave is powerful, intense yet liberating as you open your heart and sink your feet into the ground.

Mandala (Sanskrit maṇḍala “essence” + “having” or “containing”, also translates as “circle-circumference” or “completion”, both derived from the Tibetan term dkyil khor) is a concentric diagram having spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism. The term is of Hindu origin and appears in the Rig Veda as the name of the sections of the work, but is also used in other Indian religions, particularly Buddhism. In the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism, mandalas have been developed into sandpainting.

Introduced to hot yoga a few years ago, I tried Bikram a few times but didn’t fall in love. Decided to give it one more try because of my friend Esther. We both are a little crazy about the buzz of challenging exercise so I knew her recommendation was real. I let her drag me one very early morning (so not an early riser…) to USMMA in Belligham, MA. This was by far the best I’ve tried but to this day I am still trying to make the commitment. The practice is Power Vinyasa, a dynamic combination of strength, sweat and spirituality. It detoxifies, heals and electrifies. This accessible, challenging and flowing form of yoga will lead you to a state of transformation. It will sculpt, tone and hone the muscles of you body and your mind.

And yes! the instructor, Deb, rocks! Her teaching is an inspiration and her story is a transformation. She founded Yhom Yoga and believes in living what she experiences as “Abundant Survival & Manifesting Our Highest Intentional Dreams as Reality”. Click here to meet Deb.
